Held on Saturday 09-5-09 this was an extraordinarily different event, with very new contenders for most of the SSRC titles – which involved both long standing members and new members. It was a fantastic open competition providing fiercely competitive matches which were very close.
New viewing stand gave opportunity for more spectators – small and tall, young and old, public and new/existing members.
The juniors started the evening featuring juniors from Sarah's popular
Saturday coaching sessions. Aimed at encouraging juniors - Ffion and Niamh
feature in the newly introduced Girls final, Seb and Ellis in the U19 Plate and
Glyn and Sam contesting the U13s.
The U19 Main Junior Squash event (John v
Craig) was played later on in the evening as the contenders had other finals to
play. John & Craig managed to win 3-1 in an entertaining match against veteran
Racketball doubles partnership Nick & Richard who probably wished the pair were
off to university this year rather than next year.
John then played Craig in
the Junior Squash U19 final – conserving his energy with a 3-0 win, as he had
another Mens Racketball Final v Dave – taking it all the way to the wire – 3-2.
John won 3 Titles in one tournament!
Meanwhile another ex junior, Lucie, beat Head Coach Sarah in a 'never give up' Ladies Squash match – drawing many spectators. This was prior to Lucie going head-to-head against her mum Lynda for her previous Racketball Ladies title.
New mixed Racketball doubles
finalists Steve and Belinda put up a brave fight against previous winners Mike
and Lynda.
What was really nice was to see was 2 new finalists in the Squash
Handicap – Pat and Ryan. Also, 2 new Racketball Handicap finalists – Dave v
Dave – one long standing member against a new member Racketball player. New
member (new Father), Dave having a good win over the long standing member Dave.
All ages were catered for in the SSRC tournament – including Over 35s (Rob v Sean), Vets (Nick v Alan) and Vintage (Paul v Dave) – all proving to show Squash is not a dying sport – but very much alive.
The finale of the evening – as always – was the SSRC Open Squash final. Both finalists had tough oppositions and long matches in the run up to the evening. The match was fairly played and, Richard & Glen, were evenly matched – either player could have won. The new viewing stand was full with friends, family and supporters cheering the fantastic level of squash skill. Richard = SSRC champion. All members are looking forward to next year's tournament.
THANKS TO NICK TEELING – Tournament Organiser – and all markers.
